Why Grow Microgreens?
Microgreens offer up to 40% more nutrition than fully grown vegetables, and so much more flavour. They are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants and many other health benefits. This is the reason why microgreens is such a popular source of healthy nutrition in our modern world. The most amazing of all, is that microgreens can be grown indoors, on a kitchen top or window balcony, with very little water and no chemicals
Microgreens are not only good for humans. They are also good for pets to get their vitamins naturally. Cats love to eat wheat grass microgreens!
Growing your own microgreens is going to save you a lot of money too. Have you checked what they sell for in the supermarket. Why not replace your standard lettuce and other greens salad with your own home grown microgreens?
Microgreens can be used in smoothies, salads, sandwiches, braai meat and any other food recipe.
We will be stocking seeds for the most popular microgreens, including the popular sunflower, peas, beans, rocket and broccoli.
What this kit comprises
Although you don't have to use the cocopeat mat, it does offer better hydration for the young microgreens and also helps reduce potential mould growth. It also acts as a great base foundation for the microgreen shoots. Cocopeat mats can be bought separately. The Microgreen plastic trays can be used over again.
How to grow?
Place the cocopeat mat at the bottom of the plastic tray. Use a hand held spray bottle to spray water onto the mat. Let the water soak thoroughly into the mat. As the mat absorbs water it will expand a little. Let it stand for 10 minutes. Do one last water spray. Then sprinkle the seeds evenly over the whole of the mat (quite an art with the smaller seeds - but you will get the hang of it) . Spray water over the seeds.
If possible cover the tray with a piece of cardboard so that the seeds are in complete darkness. Keep it covered for 2-3 days or until after most of the seeds have germinated, then slowly introduce light to it (not direct sunlight as it can burn off the new shoots). Keep on watering at least twice per day, ensuring that the cocopeat mat is always moist (not water logged).
For bigger seeds like peas and sunflower, let them soak in water for 6-8 hours (or overnight) before spreading them on the cocopeat mat.
