Tilapia Rendalli is arguably the best fish for Aquaponics.

Also known as the Red Breast Tilapia it is arguably the most beautiful of the Tilapia species. It has 5 to 6 vertical stripes and a red throat and belly. The upper surface is olive with light brown edges to the scales. The dorsal fin has a red margin and a black spot. The lower half of the tail is red or yellow below, and green on top. Young (known as fingerlings) are silver.

Unlike the Nile and Mozambican Tilapia species which are mouth brooders, Tilapia Rendalli are substrate breeders, laying between 3000 and 8000 eggs at a time, up to 6 to 8 times a year.

Tilapia Rendalli occurs throughout most of tropical Africa, including Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. They thrive is water temperatures between 28⁰C and 32⁰C. Anglers love it for its fighting spirit.

They are voracious weed eaters, and are often introduced into dams to clean up the excess vegetation and are also used as a mosquito controller. In an aquaponics scenario they can survive solely on a diet of lettuce, duckweed with the occasional earth worm thrown in.

Studies have shown that where Tilapia farming is introduced, there was a 94% reduction in 2 types of Anopheles mosquito, the common malaria vector species.

We are authorized resellers of live fish in the Gauteng Province and try to keep stock of the very popular Rendalli from December to May.

Our Fingerlings are all larger than 2-3 cm each.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME PROVINCES SUCH AS THE WESTERN CAPE DO NOT ALLOW FOR TILAPIA TO BE KEPT WITHOUT A LICENCE - PLEASE ENQUIRE WITH YOUR LOCAL DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE OR FISHERIES.

We do not deliver live fish.. All fish have to be collected by the customer. We supply plastic bags and oxygen for max 5-6 hour trip.
