Vibrant, Beneficial Marigold Bonita Mix
This bright blend of orange, yellow, and red edible marigolds, known locally as the Afrikaner, boasts both visual appeal and practical uses. Marigolds are cherished for repelling certain garden pests while attracting beneficial pollinators. Heirloom untreated seeds
Growing Marigolds
Marigolds thrive in moderately fertile, well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. Direct sow seeds in spring or summer, barely covering with soil. Allow 7-10 days for seeds to germinate. Space plants about 26 cm apart. Water weekly except in very hot weather when more frequent watering may be needed. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Plants reach 30-60cm tall.
Culinary and Companion Uses
Marigold petals add festive colour, aroma, and subtle flavour to dishes. They can be used fresh or dried. As companion plants, marigolds help deter pests like nematodes and mosquitoes. Their scent even repels deer! They attract pollinators like bees and ladybugs that prey on unwanted insects.
History
Marigolds originated in Mexico and Central America. Spanish explorers first brought them to Europe in the 1500s. These classic cottage garden favourites are now grown worldwide. The marigold Bonita mix includes Targetes patula varieties, known as French marigolds.
Marigold Bonita brings beauty, versatile utility, and a lively taste of the tropics to gardens and recipes. Their glowing flowers are both edible and beneficial.
