BEN'S AQUAPONICS HOBBY GOES COMMERCIAL - PRETORIA EAST

When Ben built this aquaponics system in his backyard in Pretoria East, it started off as a hobby. It's now become a full time job that actually generates an income.

The main purpose of the system is to produce vegetables, predominantly lettuce, though once or twice a year some of the fish do go to the grill or frying pan.

At this stage, lettuce and other vegetables get sold to family, friends and neighbours.

The current system comprises of:

  • 1 x 12 000 litre fish tank
  • 1200 x Gift Tilapia
  • 4 x 1800 litres DWC (Deep Water Culture) grow beds, each holding 152 lettuce heads
  • 5 x 900 Litre grow beds

Ben is now looking at building a much bigger system which will more than double the size of his current operations.

SO AQUAPONICS CAN BE DONE COMMERCIALLY IN GAUTENG as proven by Ben.
