NB: PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT DELIVER FISH. YOU NEED TO ARRANGE FOR OWN COLLECTION FROM OUR AQUAPONICS SETUP IN LANSERIA.  Note that once packed in bags with oxygen, the fish only have 6-7 hours travel time. Please bring a cooler box if possible when collecting fish. ALL fish will need to be collected from our farm in Lanseria, by prior arrangement

The African Catfish or Barbel/Barber as its known in South Africa, is an interesting species. They have lungs so can breathe air, which means that you do not need large amounts of dissolved oxygen in your tank or pond.  It is a good species to have in you aquaponics system, as they are voracious eaters and hence good ammonia generators. They happily co-exist with other fish, provided those fish are bigger than them. If there is a power failure and teh water pumps or air pumps stop working, catfish can survive for days, unlike tilapia and other species that will die within minutes or a few hours. 

Please note that Catfish are cannibalistic in nature. They will eat their own kind, if smaller than them.. It is therefore very important to stock your pond or tank with similar sized fish. Also a good idea to create hiding places for the smaller ones, such as pipes or rocks. 

Cat fish can also supply very cold water temperatures as low as 4⁰C. Of course, the warmer the water temperature, the more active they are. Ideally 20⁰C water temperature or higher.

Our Catfish-Barbel fingerlings are Approximately 0.5-3g,  3-4 cm, 4-8 weeks old

We do not deliver live fish.. All fish have to be collected by the customer. We supply plastic bags and oxygen for max 5-6 hour trip.
